To assess the safety and feasibility of intermittent calorie restriction in people and to assess the effect of intermittent calorie restriction on inflammation, ceramide levels, mitochondrial function and oxidative stress.
A controlled dietary intervention to determine the impact of intermittent calorie restriction on multiple sclerosis phenotype will be undertaken, focusing on aspects of inflammation and immune function. All volunteers will be managed and under the care of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine staff and will not be present as participants at any time in USDA Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center facilities while enrolled in this protocol. This protocol will be reviewed and approved by the Johns Hopkins University Institutional Review Board prior to initiation.
