Objective:
1. Develop the intellectual framework for an integrated program that addresses how food systems can provide nutritious and culturally appropriate food. The program will emphasize human nutrition/health, agricultural production, and value-added processing within the context of economic, environmental, and social sustainability. (NP 216: components 1c, 2a, 3b, 3c; NP 107: components 1a, 2b, 3b) 2. Develop the physical framework to support the new Food Systems program including the material needs of ARS scientists and support staff. This includes the need for office and support space and computing capability sufficient for systems modelling approaches. 3. Develop appropriate linkages within and between USDA-ARS and the University of Vermont for the purpose of forming an integrated Food Systems program.

Approach:
Establish Headquarters project for food systems research, which will be transferred to NEA to establish an agreement with University of Vermont to carry out project objectives.
