Research Project: Building a Winter Malting Barley Market for the Great Plains

Location:

Project Number: 3072-21000-009-028-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 1, 2017
End Date: Dec 31, 2020

Objective:
1. Evaluate the winter malting barley trial coordinated by Dr. Kevin Smith at Lahoma and Altus, OK in replicated trials with three replications. 2. Screen all entries for RWA, greenbug, and bird cherry-oat aphid resistance in the greenhouse in Stillwater, OK. 3. Identify locally adapted barley cultivars from our existing breeding programs. 4. Introgress malting quality characteristics into adapted germplasm by crossing and selection.

Approach:
Will participate in Objectives 1, 2, 3, and 4 with specific expertise in Objective 2. Will screen for aphid resistance, provide lines for crossing, make crosses, share early generation materials, make selections, and increase seed for eventual release or testing as in required by the malting barley industry.
