Objective:
The specific objectives of the proposed research is to assess the best method for detecting and removing plastic contamination at the gin-stand feeder apron. The gin stand feeder apron has been selected as it provides the only place in the gin where the cotton is presented in a thin stream of open-locked cotton and is at a position where the cotton can also be easily diverted when any contamination is detected.

Approach:
The research will assess the commercial potential for the previously developed lab based method to detect contaminates; the research will provide a cost analysis as well as performance assessment, to be conducted in the laboratory as well as in a commercial field trial. The laboratory work will assess efficacy of the proposed system and the commercial field work will assess issues associated with operating such a system on a fully autonomous operation that will span 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. The detection method to be explored is use of low-cost High-speed machine vision using off the shelf color-cameras; for detection of plastic contaminants.
