Research Project: Biological Control of Invasive Insect Pests and Weeds

Location: European Biological Control Laboratory

Project Number: 0212-22000-030-004-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 23, 2018
End Date: Dec 22, 2023

Objective:
Identify the mite and insect fauna associated with target invasive species. Target insects: Pyrrhalta viburni, Bactrocera oleae (+other fruit flies), Anoplophora glabripennis, Bagrada hilaris. Target weed species: Genista monspessulana, Arundo donax, Ventenata dubia. Evaluate the efficiency and specificity of potential biological control agents. Develop and implement biological control management programs for the target invasive species.

Approach:
A taxonomic characterization of the mite and insect fauna associated with the target pests and weeds will be conducted in their native range. The most promising species identified will be evaluated under laboratory and field conditions for efficacy and specificity. Insect and plant interactions with symbionts will be explored to determine they affect the efficacy and specificity of biological control agents.
