Research Project: Genetic Analysis of Multiple Eastern Gamagrass Ecotypes

Location: Grassland Soil and Water Research Laboratory

Project Number: 3098-13610-008-72-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Nov 1, 2018
End Date: Sep 30, 2019

Objective:
To look at ploidy level of 60 natural accessions of eastern gamagrass collected in Texas and Oklahoma.

Approach:
The ploidy level of each accession will be determined by measuring the DNA content in the nuclei of leaf tissue using a flow cytometry, and when necessary, the number of chromosomes in the root tips of selected plants will be counted using phase contrast microscopy. The method of reproduction will be determined by using cytological and molecular methodologies. This will identify genetic duplicates clones and provide a more accurate morphological and physiological assessment of the genotypes.
