Research Project: Identifying and Testing Biological Control Agents for Invasive Weeds

Location: Office of International Research Engagement and Cooperation

Project Number: 0210-22310-004-009-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2018
End Date: Jul 31, 2019

Objective:
To find, test, prioritize, and eventually release host specific, environmentally safe, and effective biological control agents against selected target weeds.

Approach:
An interagency agreement will be established between ARS and CABI Switzerland to conduct foreign exploration for potential biological control agents, host range testing on prioritized agents, studies on the biology and phenology of potential agents, investigations to determine the impact of prioritized agents on the respective target weed, the establishment of rearing protocols, and – provided the selected agent proves specific enough – the preparation of release permit documents, for a total of nine target weeds.
