Research Project: European Approval of Plum Pox Virus Resistant (PPV-R) Trees, 2018

Location: Innovative Fruit Production, Improvement, and Protection

Project Number: 8080-21000-029-015-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2018
End Date: Aug 31, 2021

Objective:
The objective for this project is for the European Union (EU) to approve genetically engineered (GE) specialty crops for import and cultivation. An approved application would benefit both the United States and EU farmers by providing a pathway for EU Member States to grow and import GE plants and their plant products, perhaps also facilitating public acceptance of the technology.

Approach:
Testing of GE plums for horticultural traits, virus resistance, and pollen–mediated gene flow will be done under European growing conditions. An existing replicated planting of HoneySweet and HoneySweet hybrids will be managed and used for evaluation of fruit set, fruit size, fruit color, fruit brix, yields, disease susceptibility, and pollen flow to non-transgenic trees.
