Research Project: Alternative Management Systems of 'Columbia Star' Blackberry for Improved Machine-harvested Yield & Quality

Location: Horticultural Crops Research

Project Number: 2072-21220-003-27-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: Sep 1, 2018
End Date: Sep 30, 2019

Objective:
Determine the impact of planting system, primocane management and pruning/training treatments on growth, yield, fruit quality, and labor requirements of 'Columbia Star' when machine-harvested for a processed market.

Approach:
The planting design will be a split-split plot with planting method (flat vs. raised) as the main plot effect (whole rows), pruning/training treatment (Aug-trained vs. new-over-old) as sub-plot (half rows) and primocane suppression (with or without) as sub-sub plots; this design is necessary for comparing raised beds to flat (whole rows) and to better evaluate impact on pruning/training method on machine-harvested fruit quality (contaminants). There will be four replicates of each treatment (32 plots).
