Research Project: Biocontrol of fire ants with virus natural enemies

Location: Imported Fire Ant and Household Insects Research

Project Number: 6036-32000-048-24-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2018
End Date: Aug 31, 2019

Objective:
Utilize viruses as biological control agents for sustainable control of red imported fire ants.

Approach:
Fire ant viruses will be released into fire ant populations by various methods including baits and drenches. Molecular methods will be used to monitor for the presence of these viruses and to quantify their replication. Changes in fire ant mound densities will be used to determine impact compared with a control area.
