Location: Floral and Nursery Plants Research
Project Number: 8020-21000-157-004-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 27, 2018
End Date: Aug 26, 2023
Objective:
The objective of this cooperative agreement is to support the collection and conservation of seven Viburnum species native to the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic U.S. (Viburnum acerifolium, V. dentatum, V. lentago, V. nudum, V. prunifolium, V. rufidulum and V. opulus var. americanum) which are threatened by the introduced viburnum leaf beetle (Pyrrhalta viburni).
Approach:
The cooperator and ARS will work together to determine protocols to best collect a diverse gene pool to conserve the targeted species. This will involve scouting locations, collecting required quantities of seed, cleaning, accessioning and banking of seed at cooperators seed bank until end of each collecting season, vouchering the plants, taking photos, and recording detailed site data including GPS location and site conditions, shipping of seed from field to cooperator and from cooperator to ARS.
