Research Project: Evaluation of Laboratory Scale Commercial Rice Milling

Objective:
1. Investigate the agreement between commercial mill results and results from Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS) procedures using the approved sheller (Grainman Sheller No. 64 for southern production and Yamamoto Sheller FC2K for western production) and miller (Grainman Miller No. 65) for long grain, medium grain and short grain rough rice. This study will include conventional and hybrid cultivars. The rough rice samples will be collected from four representative commercial mills. 2. If significant differences in milling performance between commercial mills and the Grainman Miller No. 65 are identified via research objective 1 and if authorized by FGIS, investigate alternate procedures to align the Grainman Miller No. 65 more closely to commercial mill results.

Approach:
The project will focus on comparing the results of laboratory milling and commercial milling environments. The second year will focus on replication and, if authorized by FGIS, improvement and optimization of laboratory milling procedures to more closely align Grainman milling performance with that of commercial mills. The project will identify the sample sources and suppliers through a joint effort of the project investigators and the FGIS team. Factors Affecting Milling Results: Six major factors will be evaluated for comparing the milling results of laboratory milling and commercial milling environments. They are: rice types (long, medium, short grains; rice cultivars (conventional, hybrid cultivars); cultivation region (one west and two south regions); milling time (spring, summer, autumn, winter); milling site (location or milling environment); mill characteristics (across multiple commercial milling systems). To obtain replicated data, selected samples from the same sources will be collected and milled in the second year. For improving the laboratory milling procedures, all of the steps related to rice sample preparation and milling will be reviewed based on the first year results. If authorized by FGIS the selected factors/steps that need to be improved will be studied and optimized in the second year. Rice types and cultivars: Since different types of rice may have different milling characteristics for both laboratory and commercial milling environments, all three types of rice, long, medium and short grains, will be evaluated. Similarly, conventional and hybrid rice cultivars may have distinct milling properties and impacts on milling performance which will be considered in the study. Cultivation region and site: Rice samples will be collected from rice millers at the two major rice production regions, western (California) and southern regions (Louisiana and Arkansas). Both rough and milled rice samples along with the related quality information will be collected from the four commercial rice millers. For the laboratory mill analysis, the rough rice samples will be milled using the approved Sheller (Grainman Sheller No. 64 and Yamamoto Sheller FC2K) and miller (Grainman Miller No. 65) following official FGIS milling procedures at an official inspection lab, California Agri Inspection Co., Ltd, in Sacramento, California (Cal-Agri). The milling quality of milled rice samples from commercial mills will also be evaluated and compared with the rice miller and lab milling results. All data will be statistically analyzed to determine any differences and causes. Milling time: Rice samples will be collected and milled through different seasons (spring, summer, fall and winter) from May 2016 to February 2018. Mill characteristics: To account for the impact of possible differences in commercial milling systems and technologies on milling performance, the participation of a relatively new commercial mill in close proximity to the established mills in either Arkansas or Louisiana will be sought.
