Research Project: Field Testing of Combined Sequencing and Data Collection Platform for Simultaneous Vector and Pathogen Detection from Surveillance Collections

Location: Mosquito and Fly Research

Project Number: 6036-32000-050-83-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Aug 14, 2018
End Date: Sep 30, 2018

Objective:
The overall objective is to apply improved technology to arthropod surveillance and control. We intend to use nanopore sequencing to rapidly identify both the arthropod species as well as identify the presence of pathogens based on isolated nucleic acids from mixed field collected samples. A portion of this project is to test and evlauate a mobile data collection and analysis software system. USDA/CMAVE/MFRU is the best option to develop this application as we are currently using this technology.

Approach:
Collaborators will collect and provide samples of arthropods for analysis. USDA will use funds to produce a unified software data collection and analysis units with field capable RT-PCR. USDA will assist with sequencing data collection, sample analysis, and validation of samples from Haiti. This will rely on knowledge gained from current, ongoing work with nanopore sequencing technology and methods.
