Research Project: Weather Extremes, Conservation, Risk Management Nexus

Location: Northwest Sustainable Agroecosystems Research

Project Number: 2090-11000-008-23-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 24, 2018
End Date: Sep 23, 2021

Objective:
Quantify and document how current and potential future risk management policy and programs address the impact of extreme weather events and provide options that promote conservation and sustainable intensification.

Approach:
We will use case studies as real-world examples to examine strengths and weaknesses of current USDA programs and formulate recommendations and materials to address conservation and sustainable intensification goals. These studies will engage producers (farmers, conservation districts), agencies (NRCS, RMA, ARS, NASS) and Land Grant institutions (University of Idaho and Washington State University) coordinated by the Pacific Northwest (PNW) Climate Hub. Furthermore, the extreme weather, conservation, risk management nexus is a National issue and we intend to examine other situations where further coordination is warranted.
