Research Project: Role of Mating-type Genes in Pathogenicity of Fusarium graminearum to Wheat

Location: Cereal Disease Lab

Project Number: 5062-21220-022-005-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2018
End Date: Sep 30, 2021

Objective:
Develop new strategies to manage Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) through understanding pathogen biology.

Approach:
Fungal genes for mating will be deleted and tested for their ability to cause disease and accumulate mycotoxins when inoculated to wheat. If mating genes are specifically involved in disease or toxin production they will be used as targets for either chemical or molecular (eg RNAi) strategies to block their activities in order to manage the head blight disease.
