Research Project: Enhancing Resource Use Efficiency Through Improved Environmental Control in Poultry Housing

Location: Poultry Research

Project Number: 6064-32630-008-02-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 17, 2018
End Date: Sep 16, 2020

Objective:
Improve the profitability of commercial poultry growers through water and energy conservation during the growout cycle. Objectives include, (1) quantifying evaporative cooling media (e.g. media type, age) effects and, (2) characterizing operating parameters (e.g. recirculating rates) on cooling efficiency in broiler houses.

Approach:
Environmental conditions in commercial broiler houses will be monitored to evaluate the cooling efficiency for media and management schemes. Water and energy usage for whole-house evaporative cooling systems will be measured with farm control systems and developed instrumentation (e.g. power and water meters). Weather conditions will be continuously monitored through an on-site weather station. Data will be analyzed through statistical comparisons.
