Research Project: Agricultural Research Service Technical Support to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-13610-030-040-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2018
End Date: Aug 31, 2023

Objective:
The objectives of this agreement will result in: 1) The development of an approach to produce wetland change maps for the contiguous U.S. 2) The transfer of resultant maps and capability to produce such maps to the FWS through technical documents, software and training.

Approach:
Wetland change maps will be produced through analysis of time-series satellite imagery, including Landsat and Sentinel-1/2 data. Multiple wetland change signatures will be investigated for their capacity to infer: 1) wetland to upland and 2) wetland type change, including hydrologic (i.e., inundation and soil saturation), vegetative, and other signatures. The resultant wetland change models will be trained and evaluated using either new standard compliant NWI maps, fine spatial resolution multispectral imagery and/or field data. Technical transfer will be a key component of the project.
