Research Project: Systematics and Identification of Fungi Causing Flag Smut and Barcoding of Taxa on Non-Grass Hosts

Location: Mycology and Nematology Genetic Diversity and Biology Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-22000-298-26-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2018
End Date: Dec 31, 2019

Objective:
ARS will investigate the systematics of the flag smut of wheat pathogen, Urocystis tritici, and related taxa and develop molecular based methods for identification.

Approach:
ARS will characterize use fresh and herbarium specimens using DNA sequence data and microscopy. ARS will collect new specimens to be accessioned into the U.S. National Fungus Collections. ARS will identify candidate markers for diagnostic assays, enter data on new collections into U.S. National Fungus Collections fungal databases website and be make sequence data available through public databases such as GenBank.
