Research Project: Collection and Cryopreservation of Catfish and Gulf Coast Oysters

Location: Plant and Animal Genetic Resources Preservation

Project Number: 3012-31000-006-16-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 15, 2018
End Date: Jun 14, 2021

Objective:
Collection development for aquatic species has lagged behind livestock and poultry collections, and as a result ARS, university and industry populations have not been sufficiently sampled. Through this agreement, ARS, university and industry catfish and oyster populations along the Gulf Coast will have germplasm sampled, cryopreserved, and shipped to the repository.

Approach:
Cooperator and ARS will jointly determine populations of catfish and oysters to sample. Cooperator will arrange for collections on-site or have samples shipped to Cooperator's laboratory for germplasm collection and cryopreservation. Sufficient numbers of males (minimum=50) and germplasm (minimum-1,500) will be sampled to meet collection targets set by ARS. Cryopreserved samples will be shipped to ARS/Fort Collins. In addition, phenotypic (body weight, length, approximate age), management and production system information will be collected.
