Research Project: Identification of Risk Factors Leading to Arrival and Establishment of Exotic Psyllids in North America

Location: Temperate Tree Fruit and Vegetable Research

Project Number: 2092-22430-002-033-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2017
End Date: Nov 30, 2019

Objective:
Develop a list of biological and biogeographical “risk factors” associated with successful establishment of non-native psyllids in North America

Approach:
Synthesis of an extensive worldwide literature summarizing psyllid life histories, host associations, and biogeography will be used to compare those traits between 50 North American exotic species, and a random sample of 300 psyllid species encompassing the worldwide fauna. The project will use a multivariate approach to identify biological or biogeographical traits more common in the 50 exotics than in the random sample. Traits that occur commonly in exotic psyllid species will be assumed to be associated with invasiveness of psyllids.
