Research Project: Early Detection of Red Palm Weevil Using Acoustic and Optical Methods

Location: Insect Behavior and Biocontrol Research

Project Number: 6036-22000-030-59-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2018
End Date: Jun 30, 2021

Objective:
To develop cost-effective methods for early detection of Red Palm Weevil in field environments.

Approach:
Two different types of sensing systems will be considered. An optical fiber distributed acoustic sensor (DAS) will be developed as a previously untested solution for early detection, and a new acoustic detection system will be developed based on new technology that has been introduced since 2010, including advances in noise cancellation. Investigator will contribute to specifications and design, and will contribute to field testing of both systems.
