Research Project: A Nutrimetabolomic Approach to Identify Biomarkers of Whole Grain Intake

Location: Food Components and Health Laboratory

Project Number: 8040-51000-059-002-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2018
End Date: Jun 30, 2024

Objective:
The objective of this research is to discover biomarkers of whole grain wheat and whole grain oat intake and to validate those identified biomarkers through a controlled human dietary intervention.

Approach:
Urine and blood will be collected and analyzed using small molecular weight biochemical profiling (metabolomics) to identify possible biomarkers of whole grain wheat and whole grain oat intake. Samples will be collected from humans following acute dietary exposure as well as longer-term dietary exposure to these grains with a dose response.
