Research Project: Molecular-based Initiatives to Support the Old World Bollworm Strategic Management Plan (FY 18)

Location: Southern Insect Management Research

Project Number: 6066-22000-091-007-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2018
End Date: Sep 30, 2022

Objective:
Develop specific molecular-based initiatives that will be used to support the USDA’s Strategic Management Plan for Old World Bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera).

Approach:
Genomics resources developed at Southern Insect Management Research Unit will be used to develop molecular assays based on high-throughput sequencing techniques and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays based on monoclonal antibodies to identify invasive Helicoverpa armigera and hybrids progeny with Helicoverpa zea. These assays will focus on identifying. Antibody-based detection methods will be develop to identify invasive Old World Bollworm (OWB) interceptions at ports of entry.
