Research Project: Characterization of Resistance in Melon to Sweetpotato Whitefly

Location: Crop Improvement and Protection Research

Project Number: 2038-21530-002-016-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2018
End Date: Sep 30, 2022

Objective:
Characterize interactions of sweetpotato whitefly and select melon accessions for host plant resistance to whitefly.

Approach:
Comparative laboratory studies of whitefly feeding on a susceptible commercial cultivar with three melon accessions identified to have potentially useful levels of host plant resistance to whitefly: feeding behavior on healthy and virus-infected melon plants, virus titer measurements, whitefly and/or elicitor priming effects, controlled inoculations, effects of virus and whitefly resistance on virus acquisition, electro penetration graphing in healthy and virus infected plants, and metabolic profiling.
