Research Project: Warm-season Grass Biomass and Seed Production in Central Illinois

Location: Dairy Forage Research

Project Number: 5090-12210-001-02-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2018
End Date: Jul 31, 2019

Objective:
1) Conduct field evaluations of switchgrass for biomass yield and quality in collaboration with ARS. 2) Use switchgrass seedlings provided to increase seed yield and evaluate selected switchgrass populations.

Approach:
Cooperator will establish seed production and evaluation plots of switchgrass populations selected by ARS as part of the ARS breeding program. For FY18, this will involve harvesting four existing nurseries and the establishment and seed production for 10 new nurseries. These numbers will differ in future years, depending on the specific activities of the breeding program. Cooperator will conduct all weed control, monitoring, seed harvest, and seed threshing activities. Cooperator will ship threshed seed to ARS in Madison, WI at the end of each growing season. Cooperator will establish forage and biomass field trials in central Illinois in FY19. Cooperator will conduct all planting, plot maintenance, harvesting, data collection, sample collection, and sample grinding. Samples will be shipped to ARS in Madison, WI after grinding. Data will be delivered to ARS in Madison, WI after the final harvest in autumn.
