Objective:
The objectives of this cooperative research are to: 1) investigate the ability of trained nilgai to teach naïve nilgai to utilize corn or protein feeder; 2) investigate interactions of trained nilgai with naïve white-tailed deer (WTD) at feeders to determine if nilgai begin eating corn and WTD deer feeders, and 3) determine if nilgai and WTD can be treated with entomopathogenic nematodes at feeders.
Approach:
Research with feeders will take place at a private ranch in Willacy County with a secure high fence to contain the nilgai and WTD observed in the study. WTD and nilgai will be captured and tagged prior to the test. Trained nilgai will be relocated from a ranch in Live Oak Co. Two types of feeders will be set up with either corn or high protein pellets. Feeding activity will be monitored with game cameras for a period of one year.
