Research Project: Water Resource Assessments in the Sub-watersheds of the Cache River Critical Groundwater Area

Location: Delta Water Management Research

Project Number: 6024-13000-003-038-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2018
End Date: Jul 30, 2022

Objective:
Owing to the on-going decline of the alluvial aquifer and lack of surface water diversions planned for the Cache River Critical Groundwater Area (CRCGA), future targeting of resources in the region will benefit from specific, detailed assessments conducted at the sub-watershed level. The goals of this project are to devise efficient, scalable procedures that determine potential: 1. Sites for the construction of new on-farm reservoirs and irrigation weirs. 2. Sites where managed aquifer recharge (i.e., infiltration galleries) are feasible. 3. Scenarios that integrate surface water resources and irrigation conservation practices to achieve user-specified aquifer withdrawal reduction goals.

Approach:
Use remote-sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques to inventory available water resources to identify and help prioritize potential sites for conjunctive water-use projects, such as on-farm reservoirs, irrigation weirs, and/or infiltration galleries. These conjunctive-use projects will be integrated with different irrigation conservation scenarios in an EXCEL-based model to allow what-if analyses for future resource allocations in the CRCGA.
