Objective 1: Quantify synergistic impact of rye residues and herbicides on weed seedling growth and survival under controlled environment and field conditions. Objective 2: Elucidate physiological impact of rye residues on herbicide metabolism of weed seedlings.

We will conduct controlled environment and field studies of the independent and combined effects of soil incorporated rye residues and S-metolachlor on the growth and survival of Amaranthus retroflexus and Amaranthus tuberculatus seedlings. Within greenhouse studies only, we will quantify the dose response of Amaranthus spp. mortality to S-metolachlor in soils with and without rye amendment. Finally, we will use standard herbicide metabolism laboratory procedures to determine whether shifts in S-metolachlor dose response of Amaranthus seedlings is due to altered detoxification, altered translocation or another mechanism.
