Research Project: Development of Apple Rootstock Technologies for U.S. and Kazakhstan Apple Growers

Location: Plant Genetic Resources Unit (PGRU)

Project Number: 8060-21000-029-004-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 15, 2018
End Date: Apr 14, 2023

Objective:
Both Parties believe that interactions between the two Parties, will enhance the implementation of released Geneva rootstocks with improved performance relating to anchorage, deep rooting, free standing ability, productivity, disease resistance and scion-rootstock interactions.

Approach:
To this end the parties wish to enhance collaboration in the following areas: a) Exchange of information, data and procedures on relevant technologies, scientific results and capacities relating the performance, propagation of apple rootstocks being developed in Geneva, NY. Research in Kazakhstan on disease resistance, wild relatives of apples, soil fertility relating to the performance of apple rootstocks. Research on rootstock fire blight and components of replant disease. Research on rootstock interaction with different soil types. b) Capacity building/training on specific needs related to mutual areas of interest. Both parties will organize and participate in field days/seminars that enhance implementation of findings in U.S. and Kazakhstan orchards. c) Exchange of experts and students for research cooperation on specific projects identified to be of mutual interest. d) Evaluation and exchange of temperate fruit cultivars and rootstocks in Kazakhstan growing conditions that feature mutual research questions.
