Research Project: Genetic Characterization of Spodoptera frugiperda Populations (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in Ecuador

Location: Insect Behavior and Biocontrol Research

Project Number: 6036-22000-030-56-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 1, 2018
End Date: Feb 28, 2020

Objective:
Compare the distribution and frequency of genetic markers in fall armyworm from Ecuador with those from the rest of the Western Hemisphere to infer migration patterns in Central America.

Approach:
Hand collection of larvae and pheromone traps will be used to collect specimens from the field in Ecuador. Standard molecular biology, Polymerase Chain Reaction amplification, and DNA sequence analysis will be used to characterize genetic markers.
