Research Project: Quarantine Risk Assessment Studies and Overseas Surveys for Classical Biological Control of Brazilian Pepper

Location: Invasive Plant Research Laboratory

Project Number: 6032-22000-012-45-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2018
End Date: Jun 30, 2019

Objective:
1. Continue survey for potential biological control agents in South America. 2. Colonization and testing of the defoliating caterpillars (Geometridae, Noctuidae, sawfly) against the high priority species of Anacardiaceae that occur in North America. 3. Conduct chemical analysis of the collected sawflies to determine presence of potentially toxic materials. 4. Maintain colonies of the thrips for field release when granted final approval. 5. Maximize thrips colony production to prepare for release during 2018-2019.

Approach:
Conduct quarantine host testing to determine safety of potential agents for biological control.
