Research Project: Crop Yield Assessment and Mapping by a Combined use of Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-1 Images

Location: Soil, Water & Air Resources Research

Project Number: 5030-11610-005-077-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2018
End Date: Apr 30, 2020

Objective:
Develop new algorithms and products for agriculture monitoring, namely crop yield assessment and mapping, by combining moderate resolution images acquired by Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-1/SAR remote sensing satellites.

Approach:
The project will take advantage of an increased temporal frequency of observations and coverage as well as a combination of optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery to generate new products that will improve crop yield mapping at regional and field scales. The main tasks of the project will include: (1) data preparation and collection to ensure consistency of satellite data records, meteorological information and statistical data on crop area and yield; (2) generation of crop specific maps (wheat, corn, and soybeans); and (3) crop yield assessment and mapping; validation will be done for multiple test sites within the Joint Experiment of Crop Assessment and Monitoring (JECAM) network of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO).
