Research Project: Sourcing Barley Accessions from the Vavilov Institute in Russia to Enhance Cold Tolerance and Stem Rust Resistance

Location: National Germplasm Resources Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-21000-280-015-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2017
End Date: Sep 30, 2020

Objective:
To obtain accessions of wild and cultivated barley that have low temperature tolerance and stem rust resistance for addition to the US National Plant Germplasm System.

Approach:
1. Collaborate with the Vavilov Institute to increase 500 samples of germplasm of wild and cultivated barley in the Vavilov collections that are likely to have tolerance to low temperatures and resistance to stem rust. Use knowledge from past evaluations by the PI to select the most promising material for increase. 2. Arrange for the increased material to be shipped to the U.S. in compliance with all regulations on germplasm exchange and plant health of Russia and the U.S. 3. Deposit the germplasm and all associated documentation in the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System where it will be available for use in research, plant breeding, and education. 4. Provide a detailed report, including information on all samples obtained, to ARS.
