Research Project: Remote Sensing Support for Precision Fumigation in Strawberry Production

Location: Crop Improvement and Protection Research

Project Number: 2038-22000-016-18-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2017
End Date: Jul 31, 2020

Objective:
The objective is to develop a precision fumigation strategy for management of soil borne pests of strawberry. Soil inoculum levels of pathogens and remote sensing data will be used to evaluate disease risk and assess the necessary rate of fumigant that needs to be applied to manage the disease risk.

Approach:
Field surveys to evaluate inoculum levels of several important soilborne pathogens of strawberry and a GIS map of the field will be prepared. Remote sensing data from prior seasons will be overlayed and decisions made on the appropriate rate of fumigant that needs to be applied. This will be a multiyear project on the same ground, thereby enabling a more comprehensive trial.
