Research Project: Phytophthora-infected Plant Tissue Production for Developing Tissue-based Proficiency Test Panels for the Sudden Oak Death Certification Program

Location: Foreign Disease-weed Science Research

Project Number: 8044-22000-045-01-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2014
End Date: Aug 31, 2018

Objective:
The cooperative agreement will provide a valuable set of Phytophthora ramorum or other Phytophthora-infected plant material that will be delivered to the Center for Plant Health Science and Technology (CPHST) Beltsville Laboratory that will then be lyophilized for the development of a plant tissue-based proficiency test panel for distribution to laboratories accredited by the CPHST NPPLAP (National Plant Pathogen Laboratory Accreditation Program) that wish to be certified to perform Phytophthora ramorum molecular diagnostics.

Approach:
Host plant material maintained in the greenhouse facilities at the USDA-ARS Foreign Disease-Weed Science Research Unit, Ft. Detrick, MD will be inoculated in a containment laboratory with selected strains of Phytophthora ramorum and other Phytophthora species as requested by APHIS personnel. Infected plant material will be provided to APHIS for use in plant tissue-based proficiency test panel for distribution to laboratories accredited by the CPHST NPPLAP that wish to be certified to perform Phytophthora ramorum molecular diagnostics.
