Research Project: Evaluating Mastitis and Effects of Mastitis in Range-type Sheep Flocks

Location: Range Sheep Production Efficiency Research

Project Number: 2056-31610-006-08-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2017
End Date: Sep 30, 2019

Objective:
Describe rates of clinical and subclinical mastitis in western, range-type sheep flocks and identify genetic, management, and/or nutritional factors most associated with mastitis.

Approach:
We will evaluate different wool and meat breeds of sheep for utter health, rates of mastitis, common pathogens associated with mastitis, and effects of mastitis on lamb production. Using available records, we will then identify genetic, management, and/or nutritional factors most associated with mastitis in range-type flocks. Results and products from the evaluations will be used to facilitate producers in mitigating the effects of mastitis in range-type sheep flocks.
