Research Project: Cover Crops, Water Quality, and Soil Health Research and Outreach

Location: Dairy Forage Research

Project Number: 5090-12210-001-14-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2017
End Date: Aug 31, 2019

Objective:
To develop profitable and practicable cover crop options for use in Midwestern dairy, grain and vegetable production systems, including within no-till organic systems and as forages.

Approach:
New research trials will be initiated and existing trials will be expanded to evaluate the use of cover crops on organic and conventional systems, including research on the use of red clover in forage rotations, the use of cover crops as strategies in organic no-till organic grain, the effect of cover crops on corn yield responses, nutrient losses associated with cover crop systems, and similar studies relevant to farmers' practical and profitable application of cover crops. This research will be conducted at various research farms. Outreach will also be conducted to make current and relevant information about cover crops available to farmers, including presentation at statewide conferences, production of farmer-friendly outreach materials about cover crops research being conducted through this trial, highlighting relevant cover crops information using relevant websites and social and conventional media, and developing a platform for training agricultural educators.
