Objective:
1. To determine the response of a proposed list of new soil indicator variables to be included in an updated Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF) to agricultural management practices in annual cropping systems in the United States. 2. To define the spatial extent (national) of available data for the proposed list of new soil indicator variables. 3. To develop new preliminary SMAF scoring functions for indicators where a sufficient amount of data is available to develop response curves.

Approach:
A meta-analysis of the scientific literature, published databases, and other available sources of data will be conducted to determine the current state of knowledge about the response of soil indicators to agricultural management practices in annual cropping systems in the United States. The meta-analysis will focus on a proposed list of additional soil indicators to include in the SMAF, or a second generation counterpart of the SMAF, and may also include an update on the response of current SMAF soil indicators, as time permits. Gaps in the geospatial representation of the country will be identified. Gaps in the range of soil functioning (spread of low to high functioning soils, based on differences in management systems represented in any given soil grouping) will also be identified. Based on the outcome of the meta-analysis, preliminary scoring functions will be developed for those soil indicators that have a sufficient amount of data available to develop algorithms and response curves.
