Research Project: Soil Moisture Mapping of the South Fork Iowa Soil Moisture Network with Proximal COSMOS Rovers

Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-13610-030-022-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2017
End Date: Aug 31, 2022

Objective:
Work with University of Nebraska Lincoln to generate soil moisture maps for the South Fork Iowa LTAR site and soil moisture network. Calibration and validation of the soil moisture mapping technology and intercomparison of different sensors used during SMAPVEX16 will be performed.

Approach:
The cooperative work proposed here will assess the ability to map soil moisture on a regional scale with COSMOS roving sensors ARS will direct the validation of the product versus in situ sensors and physical soil collection. UNL will generate imagery from the COSMOS sensor surveys collected in 2016 and produce soil moisture maps which address the soil type and vegetation dynamics at the regional scale.
