Project Number: 8070-13000-014-23-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 1, 2017
End Date: Jul 31, 2021
To develop sustainable golf course management strategies that simultaneously meet the performance priorities of golf course managers, reduce nutrient losses from golf courses to ground and surface waters and promote energy and nutrient use efficiencies.
USDA and Pennsylvania State University will work together to develop an experimental green where alternative turf management practices are tested. Pan lysimeters will be installed to allow replication of fertilizer and other turf management treatments. The green will be subject to public play to ensure that real world use occurs. Robotic mowing systems will be used to maintain the green. This is a multi-year project that will take place in phases. In year one (ending June 30, 2018) Penn State and USDA will select an appropriate site, design a green that can accommodate both public play and monitoring equipment, and prepare the site for construction. In year two (July 1, 2018-June 30, 2019) Penn State and USDA will work together to construct the research green. The green will be maintained by Penn State and potentially mowed with state-of-the art robotic mowers. USDA will oversee implementation of the lysimeters and research instruments. In year three (July 1, 2019-June, 2020) Penn State and USDA will implement the research project. The green will be maintained by Penn State. USDA will maintain the research equipment. A robotic mower will be purchased to maintain the green.
