Research Project: California-Adapted Barleys for Resistance to Stem Rust (UG99) - An Integrated Effort

Location: Forage Seed and Cereal Research

Project Number: 2072-21000-054-02-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2017
End Date: Oct 31, 2021

Objective:
Produce populations and inbred lines of California-adapted barleys crossed with sources of genes for resistance to the Ug99 stem rust pathogen.

Approach:
Continue making crosses to introgress Ug99 resistance into UC Davis barleys. Conduct field and GH evaluations of segregating populations and advanced lines for agronomic traits and resistance to local diseases. Send populations/lines to the screening nurseries in MN and Kenya. The materials resulting from this NACA will be available for further development and testing to select materials locally adapted carrying resistance to Ug99. This NACA supports research conducted under National Program (NP) 303, Plant Diseases. This research is conducted as part of ARS Research Project 2072-22000-042-00D, augmented by the FY2010 Program Increase for Research to Strengthen Grain Disease Research to Reduce World Hunger.
