Research Project: Lupin, Cereal Rye, and Carinata Winter Cover Crops for Biomass in the Southern Coastal Plain

Location: Crop Genetics and Breeding Research

Project Number: 6048-21000-030-02-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2017
End Date: Mar 30, 2021

Objective:
Cooperator will supply expertise and work related to growing and harvesting of summer crops, cotton and peanut, analyze plant materials for conversion to bio-fuels, and estimate cover crop, annual crop and pine crop productoin potentials from the data.

Approach:
Cooperator will be responsible for the oversight of field crop rotations comparing various winter cover crops prior to alternating summer crops of peanut and cotton including planting, crop maintenance, and harvest. Cooperator will also be responsible for undertaking economic analysis of cover crop production in agricultural and loblolly pine systems, and will evaluate environmental impacts. Cooperator will determine physical and fuel characteristics of cover crops to estimate bio-oil yield potentials. Additionally, they will determine the biochemical compositions and bioethanol yield potential of selected cover crops.
