Objective:
To support research efforts for the USAID/FAS Cacao For Peace imitative with the Colombia research institution CORPOICA. This portion of the project will analyze the genetic diversity of the cacao in the CORPOICA collections to determine the diversity and level of mislabeling and redundancy thus improving the efficacy of the preservation and use of this genetic resource.

Approach:
The Cacao for Peace initiative is a research and development project to help Colombian farmer improve cacao production and increase the research capacity of Colombian researchers. The project is funded by USAID through FAS. The funding received from this agreement covers travel and research cost for the project. USDA-ARS provides in-kind contribution to support this research. Research is to be conducted at the Sustainable Perennial Crops Research Laboratory (SPCL), in Beltsville, MD and the Subtropical Horticulture Research Station (SHRS) in Miami, Florida and at the Tropical Agricultural Research (TARS) Station in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. This is the second year of a five year project.
