Research Project: Water Resource Assessments in the Sub-watersheds of the CRCGA for Future Targeting of Conjunctive-use and Conservation Projects

Location: Delta Water Management Research

Project Number: 6024-13000-003-23-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Sep 20, 2017
End Date: Sep 30, 2021

Objective:
To conduct detailed water resource assessments of sub-watersheds comprising the Cache River Critical Groundwater Area (CRCGA) which includes portions of the Cache and L’Anguille River watersheds. The ultimate goal of the assessments is to identify and prioritize potential sites for conjunctive-use projects (e.g., on-farm reservoirs; irrigation weirs; infiltration galleries). These will be combined with irrigation practice inventories to develop a model to run scenarios useful in making future resource allocations in the sub-watersheds.

Approach:
The DWMRU and NRCS have a mutual interest in helping to bring about the conservation and wise use of land, water, wildlife, and related resources and in the furtherance of USDA conservation programs administered by NRCS in the State of Arkansas. This agreement will devise efficient, scalable procedures useful in determining potential: 1. Sites for the construction of new on-farm reservoirs and irrigation weirs. 2. Sites where managed aquifer recharge (i.e., infiltration galleries) is feasible. 3. Scenarios that integrate surface water infrastructure and irrigation conservation practices necessary to achieve aquifer withdrawal reduction goals.
