Research Project: Peanut Shipping Point Inspection Modernization Initiative

Location: Quality & Safety Assessment Research

Project Number: 6040-41440-002-07-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 10, 2017
End Date: Dec 9, 2019

Objective:
The goal of this project is to improve the peanut grading process through the development of a microwave sensor for determining trash content in peanut pod samples. The sensor will be implemented for in-the-trailer testing.

Approach:
We will develop a database of dielectric properties for peanuts of different moisture content and different trash content. From graphical and statistical analysis moisture and trash calibration equations will be established. A microwave sensor operating at a single microwave frequency will assembled and tested in the laboratory and in the field.
