Research Project: Optimizing Juniper Utilization for Bioenergy and Bio-based Products and Sageland Steppe Restoration (Delaney Forestry Services, LLC)

Location: Forage Seed and Cereal Research

Project Number: 2072-21410-004-17-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2017
End Date: May 31, 2018

Objective:
1. Determine the overall economic feasibility of utilizing biochar in agricultural and rangeland soils under a stationary biochar production scenario. 2. Assist with the development and communication of techniques to produce estimates of juniper biomass from on-ground estimates.

Approach:
Estimate the capital and operating expenses for a stationary biochar production facility using models developed by Oregon State and Washington State Universities. Ground truth observations of juniper harvest and processing will relate tree parameters to net board feet of merchantable timber.
