The purpose of this MoU shall be to foster and facilitate academic and research collaboration between the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, International Environmental Research Institute in the Republic of Korea and the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service in the United States of America with the intention of improving the quality of research and networking at each institution.

The initial scope of academic and research collaboration shall be in the areas of general education and research. However, this may be expanded to other areas of collaboration if agreed to by the Parties in a separate written agreement. The nature of any academic or research collaboration between the institutions may include, but is not limited to, the following: 1. Exchange of scientific and technical information that are of mutual interest, regarding the agricultural environment and food safety sector; 2. Technical training of researchers and experts; 3. Exchange of students for research internships; 4. Joint organization of symposia, conferences, and workshops. The terms of such mutual assistance and cooperation shall be discussed and agreed upon in writing by the appropriate representatives of both Parties prior to the initiation of any particular program or activity.
