The objective of the project is to evaluate the pathogenicity/virulence of isolates of Macrophomina phaseolina on strawberry, examine the population structure of the pathogen, and develop techniques for soil quantification.

Steve Koike (our collaborator with UC Cooperative Extension) will collect isolates of the pathogen from field samples and evaluate them for pathogenicity on strawberry and a series of other hosts. Virulence tests will also be performed to confirm if there is any host specificity for the isolates. We will conduct SSR analysis of the populations and compare CA isolates with the population structure found on other hosts in the USA (done in collaboration with Renee Arias, ARS, Dawson, GA). Soil quantification will be examined by evaluating traditional soil plating assays (Koike) and real time PCR methods (Martin).
