Research Project: Research Support for Watershed and Basin Hydrology and Water Quality in the Arid and Semi-arid Southwest, USA

Location: Southwest Watershed Research Center

Project Number: 2022-13610-012-016-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 15, 2017
End Date: Jul 31, 2021

Objective:
To evaluate the utility of innovative, distributed, low impact development (LID) infrastructure and best management practices (BMPs) for wet weather capture and drinking water aquifer recharge in the arid and semi-arid southwestern USA.

Approach:
The approach is described as follows. 1) Conduct a site visit to Fort Irwin to tour the base and consult with Fort staff; 2) Acquire the most current watershed characterization data; 3) Use AGWA to construct a KINEROS2 watershed model representation of the area draining into the Four Plex recreation area; 4) Conduct simulations using idealized precipitation inputs (uniform in time and space) of sufficient duration to drive the modeled runoff to equilibrium; 5) Develop an internal EPAARS technical report describing data sources, model construction, and initial model testing.
