Research Project: Characterization of the Or Regulatory Network for Carotenoid Biofortification in Food Crops – Phase II

Location: Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research

Project Number: 8062-21000-047-006-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 1, 2016
End Date: Aug 31, 2020

Objective:
The proposed research aims at in-depth deciphering Or function and regulatory network toward developing novel strategies for breeding agricultural important crops with enhanced B-carotene level. Accordingly, four specific objectives are proposed: 1. To isolate CmOROr-interacting partners in the CmOr regulatory pathway; 2. To identify genes and proteins in the CmOr network using the low B mutant; 3. To associate melon genetic with B-carotene level variation in our worldwide melon germplasm collection via GWAS; and 4. To functionally characterize the components in the CmOr regulatory pathway and network.

Approach:
To accomplish the specific objectives, a combination of genomics, genetic, molecular and biochemical approaches will be employed to identify and characterize important genes in the Or regulatory network.
